Things to Consider When Installing a New Heater

Now that fall has arrived in Huntsville, TX, it’s probably a good idea for homeowners to take stock of their heating system and decide if they need a new one. If they do, then now is the perfect time for it. You can select a good system and have it installed well before the temperatures get too low, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of a heater throughout the winter. As you make your decision, however, you should keep a few pertinent details in mind in order to select the best possible heater for your circumstances. A trained technician can provide more detailed advice based on your specific needs, but here are a few general guidelines to help.

Efficiency

Heater efficiency is measured in an easy-to-understand figure: AFUE, which stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It measures the percentage of energy your heater consumed that actually goes into heating your home. (The remainder is lost to troublesome components and the like.) The higher the rating, the better your system will make use of its energy, and the lower the monthly cost of heating your home will be. Look for heaters with the highest possible AFUE rating you can afford, and/or look for units with the Energy Star sticker, denoting a particularly high AFUE rating.

Power Levels

Power levels for your heater need to match the specific needs of your home, taking into account things like square footage, sunlight exposure and the presence of insulation in your walls and attic. If the heater isn’t powerful enough, it won’t get your home sufficiently warm. If it’s too powerful, it will cycle on and off multiple times throughout the day: costing you money in unnecessary expenses. The best heater for you is neither too powerful nor underpowered, but just right.
