Should I Consider a Geothermal System?

With summer coming to an end, homeowners in Huntsville, TX have an opportunity to assess their heating and air conditioning system and determine if the time has come to replace them. If it has, you might want to consider an alternative form of heating and air conditioning such as a geothermal system. Though they cost a more to install than other systems, they provide a number of long-term benefits and can help you make high monthly energy bills a thing of the past. Here’s why you should consider a geothermal system for your home.

How it Works

Once you get down 10 feet or so beneath the Earth’s surface, the temperature never changes no matter what the weather is like up above. That constant provides an infinitely renewable energy resource if properly harnessed. The system works like this: a series of coiled tubes are buried in the earth, while a pump runs a combination of water and antifreeze through them. The mixture facilitates a heat exchange with the earth: cooling the mixture in the summer and warming it in the winter. The mixture then circulates back to the system in your home, allowing you to warm or cool it as needed.

The Benefits

Because geothermal heating and cooling uses an infinitely renewable resource, it costs far less to operate than a system run on gas or electricity (as well as doing a great deal for the environment). Furthermore, because the bulk of the system is safely underground, it doesn’t suffer from the same sort of wear and tear that above-ground system experience. That means it rarely needed repairs and usually runs problem free. You do need a large piece of property to set it up, but that can be mitigated in some cases.
